Evolution of Digital Play

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in 2008, one of the biggest gaming press events of the year, Nintendo was the laughing stock of the show. Many gamers pointed and laughed at the gaming giant while others sulked at the announcements. So, what was the big announcement that made Nintendo look like a stumbling fool? It was the announcement of Wii Music and Wii Sports Resorts (a sequel to the game that took everyone by storm). To anyone outside the gaming loop they might look at these gamers in a weird way (a.k.a. “what are you, stupid?”)

So maybe I started off with a tangent, but the point of this is the creation of what Malstrom calls, in his article "Why Wii Music is Genius", digital play . It probably existed before, yet I don’t think it dawned on me until I saw Wii Music. Most “music” game we play are not about playing music, but rather keeping rhythm to a song. The idea of Wii Music is to play music with the Wii remote without the ability to mess up. In that sense, you can enjoy playing and creating music without taking a lot of time (and, potentially, money) to play a song. See, this is what the “gamers” gawked at. “Oh, there is no way to mess up. It’s a baby game.” “Who would want to play a game that is that easy.” Of course, if I told a normal person on the street that there was a way to play music without learning an instrument they would probable thing I’m crazy. That is the point. To enjoy playing music, without a sense of easy or hard.

The idea here is Digital Play. This is what the Wii is about. It’s not really a videogame as we normally see them, but instead a tool to do things we can’t normally do. It may be hard to stay fit in this day and age, or even go to the gym every day. So what does Nintendo make? Wii fit, a game about trying to stay fit. We might not always be able to go out and play a sport (especially boxing). What does Nintendo make? Wii Sports, a game where you use the Wii remote to play games. Does it make sense? Nintendo is moving games from being for basement dwellers to something anyone can enjoy.

It wasn’t until 2006 when you could say your grandmother plays video games without people wanting to put you in an institution. Now, it’s is not necessarily escapism that games are focused with; it is an extension of what we can do. This is digital play. It’s putting real life into a virtual form. We don’t need a masters to enjoy sometime, something videogames have had a problem breaking out of. No need to buy an instrument when Wii Music has sixty. They become an extension of what we can do. It gives you a opportunity one could not have without this kind of technology. It becomes mainstream, and can do things that would be outside the sphere of our normal lives.

Let me paint a picture for you.
http://www.irwebcasting.com/081002/52/5232b47438/lijasf39ho8w_hi.html
I don’t think you all will sit though a 30 minutes video (and you’ll probably get sick of "My Grandfather Clock"). At about 25:33, Miyamoto (the game’s creator) says something disturbing (to me at least). He says, “What if I had this game as a child. How much would my interest in music have changed if I had such an experience with music during music class in my kindergarten or elementary school days.” This hits the nail on the head. Can “digital play” model people? Can our lives be altered to access to this kind of resources? In the same vein, can we solve the weight problem in this country if we introduce children to fitness (via a game like Wii Fit)? Could video games be like the internet and give use access to a whole plethora of resources?

CAN DIGITAL PLAY SHAPE OUR LIVES? CAN IT GIVE US THINGS NOT THOUGHT POSSIBLE? CAN OTHER CONSUMER ELECTRONICS DO THIS?

I hope this works. I know it's not what is usually seen on the blog.

It certainly is different. But very appropriate as we adjust to a fast changing world.
Very interesting as well!

I'm not sure, about convincing you to do things in the real world but I believe there will definitely be a culture that gets created from this phenomenon, anything you can think of is being created for the wii, including but not limited to a Stripper pole, to teach you how to pole dance. Personally I don't know what will become of all of this, I'm sure it will inspire some, but most may be wannabees and get their dreams crushed thinking they know what they are doing, but I'm sure that some research may be done with some of this and alter few people's lives.

I think that it is pretty interesting to see what people in the video gaming industry can accomplish. I believe that the characters in video games are becoming more, and more life-like. My mother-in-law plays Wii, and she bought it for her husband in an attempt to keep him moving around in the house. I know that people like my wife believe that the Wii fit must be a fun way to exercise, and I have known some people who spend hours of every day in front of video games.
With these things having been said, I feel that these video games are little more than shrewdly marketed wastes of time and money. Regardless of what it is that you are trying to sell, the best way to sell it is to convince the public that your product is a necessity. Cars, computers, dish washing machines, etc., people will buy anything if they believe that life will become easier.
If you like to play sports, then I believe that you should get out of your house and play some sports. There is no replacement for real cardio vascular activity. Play wii tennis, and you might lean left or right, and you will snap your wrist, or wiggle an arm, but if you play REAL tennis, you will find yourself doing something that no video game will properly provide.....SWEATING. Running back and fourth across a tennis court in search of a green, fuzzy ball, and then stretching, and straining to hit it is hard work. This is why there are few, if any fat tennis players.
The same goes for boxing. Up until my friends and I became too old for our parent's health insurance plans, there would always be someone who brought boxing gloves to parties, and intoxicated friends are always plenty eager to knock eachother around. But that was true exercise. We would sweat, and good punches would really hurt, and you might learn something, or you might not, but you deffinatly had tried your hand at boxing, and you deffinatly got a real work out. I have nothing against video games, and I do play some games now and then, but this is not a replacement for real life activities with real life human beings. You are not reaching and maintaining a target heart rate, you are not moving your body in complex ways, and it is doubtful that you are even learning anything about whatever sport you and Mario are simulating.
When Guitar Hero came out it was like every guy who ever wanted to play the guitar, but was too lazy to actually try went out and bought this game. These guys played Guitar Hero for months, and when they could play every song on even the hardest settings they declared their greatness and ordered real guitars. Much to their suprise, and my amusement these guys realized that playing the guitar requires hours of practice, and training your fingers to move, and remembering where the best spots on the frets are to get out clear notes. Within days nobody could play Freebird, and within months, a lot of used guitars were up for sale.
I am all for various forms of escape. In fact, playing the Wii IS better for you than escaping life through drugs and alcohol. If you have to have walls knocked out of your house so that you can get out because you are too fat, then you should probably play some tennis with Mario. When I was a kid, there were fat kids with glasses (stereotype that all of these kids have turned into in my mind over the years), who escaped their status in society through pretending to be wizards, and pixies in card games. Today, I believe that these same people play the same games through video game consoles. If you want to be a ninja turtle, or a wizard, or the sugar plum fairy, or anything else that is truely impossible, or even unfeasable then I suppose that video games are great. But real exercise will truely improve your life. Punching a friend in their real face, with your real gloved fist is satisfying. Holding a real guitar, made of real wood, and moving your fingers across real strings, and real wood fretboards if satisfying. The act of creation as it applies to music is supremely satisfying. Writing, drawing, running, swimming, throwing darts, playing football, fighting, dating, fishing, hiking, are all amazing things to do with your time. Would you rather try your hand at doing these things, or just simulate it? Will our children simulate relationships? I don't like this realm of entertainment when it goes too far. It seems to me that surviving is extraordinarily easy to do, but living requires far more effort. Does Nintendo deserve a pat on the back for taking this generation one step further from real life? I have to say no. For the 250 dollars that you might spend on a game system and a controller or something, you could buy a guitar, some boxing gloves, and a tennis racket. Maybe you will be good at these things, and maybe you won't. But, at least you have tried your hand at something that you wanted to do. I hope that I didn't offend anyone. But I have never understood the love for comic books and video games that so many people hold. It's like buying pornography instead of talking to girls.

Nintendo has always been the innovative one when it comes to video games. They're creativity never fails to impress or sell.
I really think most of their sucess with the wii is giving people a chance to do something for fun that they never were able to do. Like, an elderly person who wants to bowl but can't because of arthritis. Wii can let them play. (Just an example)
Now, as whether introducing things like wii music into a music class can spark a kids interest in music, I don't agree.

As a music teacher, I have worked with MANY kids on violin and piano. And these new flow of video game instruments have really started to make teaching somewhat difficult. The younger students especially are getting frusterated quicker becuase they "get it" in the video games, but they don't in the real world. And I've had students that don't want to learn music anymore because "it's not as easy as they thought it would be." Now I'm not bashing the wii, I think it's a great video game system that can really be fun and let people do things (No matter how watered down it may be) that they never have been able to do.
But I really think it's a bad idea to introduce these systems into music classes or try to tie them into teaching. Just no.

Honestly, some digitial play I think can really help people.
We now have a new DDR (Dance dance revolution) that relies on something strapped to our feet, which allows basically free motion.
At least to me this means one major thing, "Martial Arts". With this technology, and if the Wii ever got accurate (It has a slow response, at least the four or five games I have tried, it can't keep up with real speed).
So this new technology means that, to me, we can now teach martial arts, dance, and other physical activiities around the globe without a need to centralize in places like LA and NY. So yes, it does change things. If it ever got advanced to the point where finger movements could be registered, I think even instruments would be able to be taught, at least to a certain point.
Also, it allows for activity in the home when going outside and practicing could mean heat stroke.

Although the Wii game is a good thing and it is one of the very good worth of what your money can buy.The sad thing about it, is that it is too expensive and not everybody could affort it.I think a community game center is still the best. You get to sweat and burn more calories than what you burn by playing Wii.A lot of overweight people are poor and will benefit more from outside game. It was just discovered recently that the Wii game consume more energy power than microwave and iron or any other electronics that you might be connected to.So this is more money to spend on your light bill and it is not everyone that can afford to pay more even if they get the Wii game as a gift, especially with the condition of things in the country, people will rather spend their money on food and other essential things.

I do believe Digital Play can help motivate the popularity become fit and healthy without the use of a gym membership. I own a WII and a WII fit and it is the greatest thing. I enjoy going to the gym of course, but the WII fit is amazing. After a long day of work, I really do not feel like driving to the gym so I set up my fit and get to working out. I believe it does give us things not possible. Before, I always wanted to go skiing, but of course, living in Florida with a limited income that is not possible. However, the WII offers this activity and I revel in it. It is just like real skiing.

I'm sure digital play can shape the lives of future generations if it becomes popular enough. As with all technology, such as cell phones, the internet, my space, etc.,technology shapes people's lives and how they view and interact with other people. I don't know if I think it is the best thing for us as a people. With technology being so accessible and having the ability to shop, go to school, and work online, it restricts the need for us to socialize. And I find that being able to interact with other people on a face to face level is extremely important for a person's well being and state of mind. We need social time and a real connection with other people to lift our spirits sometimes. Technology is great but at the same time it tends to take us away from each other which is not so great. What we need is balance.

This type of gameing is very interactive and it's a great hit. People all over are trying to use it and of all ages. It brings a time for the family to get together and interact with one another and have a lot of fun. i truely think that it is the future and the shape it's bringing us into is so large. The Wii music is great and so much fun to my family.

Digital play can definately shape our lives. I was so shocked when wii came out. It was an awesome creation and so many people all different ages play and have a lot of fun doing it. I think it is a good way to keep people moving around and some what exercising. I dont know if other consumers can come up with anything better, this is definately amazing.

I do think digital games can change or shape our lives in the future. The Wii can motivate some who may not have wanted to run to the gym at first but now enjoy it at home. I don't think this should replace ideal exercise. For example going to the gym, walking or running should still be part of our lives. I believe children should still go outside and play and not spend too much time on video games. On the other hand for some it has worked out great for family evenings as family time and I think that's great. I guess we can say it has advantages and disadvantages.

I have never been big on video games, however, I feel that is is great for the younger generation such as early childhood stages 5-7, when it comes to modeling certain interest such as music. I don't think the Wii should be a substitute for physical outdoor excersize, but on the other hand its a good start. Digital play is also a source of stress release. These advancements in the gaming system has a great positive impact on society, however, cant forget about the greatness of reality.

I applaud gaming systems like the WII! Sure it is still a video game but it gets the children playing them to so atleast a little more activity then they would playing any other gaming system where they would normally be sitting on their butts! We are the ones who created the "gaming generation" and i think this is a step in the right direction. And in answer to the question can it give us things no thought possible...I never thought I would be able to play a game of baseball in my bedroom, did you?

JulyssaV said...

Yes I think it could. For one, they have exercises for workouts, so you can do a nice work out at home. Then with that Wii music you could learn to play the drums. Games can also sharpen your mind, you can keep a caledar and be organized. It's great for young kids like education wise and then old people. It's a fun way to spend time with friends and family. What a better way to lose weight and have fun with you family??

I am all about this kind of digital play. I think the Wii for example, is a great new, interactive way of entertainment. Not only is it entertainment, but depending on the game, you can actually burn some calories! I can only imagine in years to come what games will be like. It also attracts people of all ages, my sister who is 9 plays the wii, and my boyfriends parents who are in their 50's also play! Video gaming is becoming more real every day. We now have virtual bowling, tennis, baseball ect. The wii is not your classic "sit on the couch, eat, and play video games" kind of system. Sometimes when I play, I break a sweat. So I am 100% for all of these new kinds of games!

Pardon my french but, Hell Yeah digital games would make a person lose weight and in fact I have done research and wrote the speech on how games of today can give mind stimulation and also an aerobic workout (mainly dance games and nintendo wii). The Nintendo wii has revolutionized the gaming world making it fun for all ages and witht he technology that system has, it is able to give a workout while playing fun games. For example, lets take the boxing game that is featured when you purchase the system. I have played that game a couple times and so far everytime I have played it i leave the game almost gasping for air (not literaly but it is a nice workout). But, one were to play it for several minutes it would turn into a regular workout for that gamer. So yes, I do believe the digital age in gaming can make a person sub-consciously lose weight

I think that video games are great for those who like and enjoy them. It puts you in a zone where you relax and just play the game and don't need to worry about your life stresses. It gives you a little bit of a break. However, it does not take the place of physical exercise like the Wii
fit game. It the Wii games you don't move around as much as if you were outside playing the real game or sport. However, for an elderly person who is not capable of getting out of the house for a run or a bike ride or whatever, the Wii is probly very good for a little bit of exercise in that it gets them moving. Also, here in Florida it can get really hot to where it is miserable outside so having an indoor exercise game can help so you're not just sitting in front of the TV. I also believe that the Wii has brought alot of families together more because it is fun for the whole family no matter how old you are. Whether you are five or sixty five. So I believe that digital gaming can be a plus, however, real exercise is also needed.

Jessica said...

To start, I believe that Wii has done some things that no system has tried and for a reason. Whereas traditional non-gamers are very happy with the system in using it to exercise and whatnot, many gamers were disappointed. Gaming is just what it sounds like- you game. You have fun. You use it to let go... not accomplish a task, make yourself completely productive, or anything like that. It is the same as watching TV, hanging out, going to the movies and whatnot.

So, for people who call it a "waste of time" also remember that it makes up for how other people waste time.

What I don't agree with Wii doing is taking the game out of gaming. If you do not have time to learn an instrument, then don't play video games either (or better yet, get off the console and go take lessons; some gamers really do need to leave the house anyhow). When I was little, we had a Nintendo and then a super Nintendo and we pretty much only played during the summer at night because our parents would make us go outside if it wasn't raining. But the games were just games. They didn't give us exercise... but they let us enjoy ourselves.

However, I greatly disagree with what Jason said. A lot of people have this strange disgust for the circle of gamers that involved not only video games but (I think he put it wanting to be wizards) but pen and paper games that didn't involve a lot of physical activity. No, they did not. However, anybody who has ever played Dungeons and Dragons know it is a very intellectually taxing game and inspired generations of writers and artists.

Back on topic... Wii can do what they will with taking the game out of gaming. It will inspire some people to truly make music or anything else Wii can come up with but I think the line between a game console and digital learning tool has yet to be drawn. This considering the fact that other than interactive games, Wii has yet to put out a really good -game- (other than Twilight Princess).

This is interesting to see how create the gaming industry have become. I think some video game character helps to depict the life style of individuals today. Before many of these game only appealed to young children and now there is a game that can entertain anyone. Digital games now allow you to be more active when playing the games instead of just laying on the sofa all lazy. The Wii game is a good thing but it is somewhat expensive, so not everyone can afford to get one. Digital games can motivate people to be active but I think they should add some more challenge to the games to make it more interesting.

Computers play a major part in almost every aspect of our lives today, with many human activities shaped by our relationship with them. If we devote time and thought now to understand how ongoing technological progress will alter our interaction with the computer, we can begin to see how we may live in the future. From the way we work to the way we spend our leisure time; from the way we pay our bills to the way the global economy works; from the way we communicate to the way we learn; ALL of these things are done with digital technology. The reality is that it HAS changed our lives. The possibilities are restricted only to ones imagination. And, as all things, there will be pros and cons. Digital games are no exception.

Ugh... Ok... I think video games are great for limited entertainment. I think these new innovations in video gaming will shape peoples lives... btu I do not necesarily think that's a good thing. For some people Wii fit/sports can be great. It is better than nothing... better than someone just sitting around on the couch. But I think it can be very dangerous for our young people. People can't really get a good work out from Wii... but I think young kids might think they can. ALso if a child is playing Wii fit/sports in their house by theirselves they are not only missing out on the physical activity of playing outside, but also the social interaction with other kids either in just a playing environment or a team atmosphere. I think people have been using TV/video games as a babysitter for way too long, and I can see it gett worse with these new innovations because now people can convince themselves that at least this videogame is god for their kid. I think video games are great so long as they are understood as entertainment not to replace real interaction, real outside time, real sports and even real music lessons!

I think digital technology is rapidly getting more and more complex and taking over people's lives in many senses. Things they can do usually in real life, now they have the option to do it on a computer or TV screen, it's insane! It's almost like people resort to doing things digitally because it's easier or more entertaining, also more convenient, which makes real life sound horrible and boring. I think people should get in touch more with reality again, even though it is alright to like to play games or have fun sometimes, people should remember that a Wii and an XBOX are not their only alternatives.

I believe that some digital play can help people! I believe that for all the kids who love video games and sit and play them all day. The ones who have gained tremendous amount of weight from it will benefit. Wii games get you into what your doing. The activities they provide are getting kids back in shape. It's also letting kids keep their minds into it without their brains turning to jello by staring at the game. All that Wii games get you up and into the game. To exercise whether you want to believe it or not!
There is a down side to it all though. Some lazy kids who were video junkies before have learned they don't have to step a foot up and off the couch to play these games. Because it's a sensor you can still act like your running or jumping or whatever by the flick of your wrist. This just lets those kids know its ok to sit on the couch and do nothing. It also keeps the kids who have social porblems at home. I mean Wii just came out with games that let you speak to someone in a whole different household by connecting to them through a box. I mean yes these kids would be talking to other people but then when they go out and the new kid at school asks them a question they still will have the face to face social problems!
So yes didgital play is a good idea and is helping kids, but at the same time it's also keeping some kids into doing the same thing as they were before!

I was born in the seventies. I have been playing video games religiously since around 1980. I have spent tens of thousands of dollars playing these games. I have played just about every brand of console to ever come out. I personally prefer Playstation 3 and X-Box 360 because of familiarity, but Wii is by far the most inventive and practically applicable system. I have seen it played a million times and it still fasinates me that it actually works. I have only seen the game(if you can call playing faux music a game)this article refers to on t.v., but it looked like an enriching way to spend time. I am dissapointed to hear it is not being received well. It seemed like another huge innovation for Nintendo.

Can digital play shape our lives? I'm not sure. If used for educational purposes-yes. Lets say racial integration for exzample. ( i know video games aren't supposed to teach u things, they' re supposed to be fun and imaginative, but the wii is definitely changing all that with its hands-on approach.) Any way the racial integrating game can make you do fun activities from other cultures, ranging from cooking to sports to...idk..battle? Thus bridging the gaps between races, and bringing them together. And if a child grows up not thinking positively of other races...well, its a good thing.

Enigma Breeze said...

I really don't know. I mean video games are fun, and everyone wants to escape reality and pretend to be someone or something else even if for a little while. I'm not sure digital play will shape a person's life, but it will give them a temporary break from the things they can't do in their real life. Maybe in a small way digital play does inspire people to do new things, but people would actually need to do it for real for it to mean anything. I think maybe digital play will hot for a awhile, but once the next thing comes in digital play will fade to black.

I think it is pretty cool what the video game industry has done lately. It is pretty evident that these video games consoles can shape our lives both literally and figuratively. Keeping us in shape with these boxing games, and sport games that i have experienced that will in fact, make you work up a sweat. However, on the other hand to me if you like to get fit and work out and play sports, then you need to get up and play real sports. To me staying in fit is going to require a little more then a sweat from Wii tennis or bowling. In conclusion i think video gamers know that the public will love the fact that "Ohh i can get in shape playing video games" And that's why they sell this idea to the people. However, Ive never seen an actual study or static that says video gaming has lowered cholesterol or lost 75 pounds because of gaming. Therefore, digital play if you want to have fun, but for real life being fit, it cannot possibly replace that.

I am not into video games but my 9 year old daughter loves them. Her DS goes everywhere we go. She has a Wii and it's fascinating to watch her play tennis, golf and even sing along with Hannah Montana. I think digital play can shape our lives. It gives you a taste of things you may not normally try in "real life". Since my daughter started playing the games on Wii last year she now wants to take singing lessons and play tennis at our rec center. You would think sitting around playing video games would make you a serious couch potato.. not the wii. It's so interactive, you are up moving around simulating the moves, for me money well spent.

I think that Digital play can mold a person's life in certain situations. I think this could be either a very good thing or a bad thing. Kids now and days stay home and play video games and.or watch TV and don't necessarily go outside to play like i did when i was a kid. For Nintendo to make this gaming system and give more useful games to not just kids but to adults as well is amazing in my eyes. I had a WII and loved it. Still I would prefer to actually be playing the sports, but its pretty cool to see how much technology has grown over the years.

The Nintendo Wii is truly innovative, but as far as shaping our lives and giving us things not possible…. I don’t think so. It is however a great party game. Wii is a very fun new way to play an interactive game with a large group of people. I look at it as a modern day board game for the family. On the other hand, I love the way people actually think that these games such as Wii Fit, are going to fix the obesity epidemic in America. I just don’t see a video game giving anyone anymore than what it is, a video game!

I believe that Wii has had a transforming and positive affect in many areas. The game encourages family interaction in the living room or family room and levels the playing field for all ages of family members. The game is curiously exciting because it brings a sense of accomplishment and ability to the players who will find themselves smiling continuously. I think the game, not just by its creation and implementation, but by its very imitation of reality can encourage everyone to believe that all things are possible. I believe Digital Play can impact lives in a positive manner and direction, and perhaps with all the cynicism in the world today and the disillusionment of people with the realities of our world, this is a good thing for humanity. Of course, I realize the challenge of really playing music, of really exercising, and of really participating in a sport and mastering necessary fundamentals is more difficult, requires practice, engenders frustrations and disappointments... but sometimes a little escapism and virtual lapses into "comforting" situations can have a healing and healthy affect on our souls.

I believe absolutely digital play can shape our lives! Like the article said in this day and age excerise on a regular basis is almost impossible. Games such as the Wii gives people to chance to have fun but also on also be somewhat active at the same time. I think to a certain degree digital play gives us things thought not possible, maybe someone who wasnt really interested in tennis could play it on the Wii and suddenly spark an interest in the sport.

I think digital play is an innovative way to get people up and moving without too much hastle. Most people aren't athletically determined or motivated. Games like this make it easier for the rest of us to enjoy things that normally wouldn't have been available. I also think it will get some couch potatoes up and moving. Interactive games like the WII offers is a brilliant idea to include people in inexpensive fun. Instead of going out and spending 50 dollars every friday night, families can enjoy an evening at home where everyone is included.

In a way I do believe that Digital Play can help motivate people to become healthy and more active. I do have a Wii, and as soon as I got it I played it every day but now it is hard for me to find time for it. Just like when it comes to going to the gym you have to be motivated to do it. It is amazing to me how far the gaming industry has come. There is no telling what we will soon be able to do on own cell phones, computers, or even in our cars.

I think that it does give an 'extention of ourselves' if you will, in the ability to do something we couldn't do in 'real life'. Such as be good at boxing, tennis, or playing an instrument, etc. On the other hand in accordance of what has also been mentioned, it enforces the ability for people to stay at home and try out these things rather than going into the world and interacting. So in the hustle and bustle of our time it is a lot more convenient and benefits many, but it still offers a sense of 'escape' if you will in allowing people to fulfill these actions they would not get to do otherwise by staying in the confines of their homes (of homes of those they're very close to). The Wii has definitely brought about an interesting trend in 'play' for both young & old. I feel there are other games/gaming that has this form of benefit; Dance Dance Revolution, Guitar Hero, etc.

I think that this is a great concept. One more thing to make people more knowledgeable and more rounded individuals. Beyond that, the opportunity to make activities physically active and fun. It's hard living in Florida and trying to get outside in that insane heat and excercise. Things like this are not only entertaing but healthy too. Maybe with all of that extra excercise and stimulation we can get some of these people off anti-depressants and get them to start living their life a little more enjoyably.

Yes, i feel that digital play has shaped our lives. With Wii Fit coming out i feel that it has increased the percent of people exercising. For people that have never used the wii i could see if you would doubt that it is a good workout, but for the people that have used it know how much it works. The wii system doesnt hurt anyone it is a great workout it brings the family together.
Yes the wii can do things that really are not possible you can go snowboarding in florida, and play tennis in your living room so i feel that it can make anything possible when you are playing.
There are many consumer electronics out there that can put you in a location that you dream about. TV's,dvd players, now with the blue ray players.

As a child, videogames were never one of my priorities. I do have to say that I enjoy Wii and think it is a very fun spin on the electronic gaming world. I find it sad that the kids these days would rather play a videogame than run outside and play. I do not think that Wii music is a great idea.

My brother has been drumming since the age of two and he thinks Wii music makes children want to be lazy with instruments. It is a cool way to introduce 60 different instruments, but I think it takes away the drive to take on the difficult task of actually learning the drums, guitar or whatever it might be.

I do think these technology advances will shape our society. For the good or bad is a tricky question. Maybe Wii Fit will help someone loose weight but they could have lost the weight before Wii came out to tell them what to do. It seems to me that the more time goes by, the more people need to be entertained.

Digital play can shape lives, with the technological advances evolving in are time anything is possible. The new Wii console created by Nintendo can be played with a person’s body movement revolutionizing games and technology alike. This is the first step to interactive gaming allowing players to have fun and also break a sweat while doing so. Extraordinarily all types of players ranging from all ages and genders are hooked on the Nintendo Wii. I believe it’s a great idea introducing technological advancements on video games for creativity and technology go hand in hand. Also with Wii costing less than all other modern gaming systems makes this product even better.

I do believe that Digital Play can shape our lives. Young kids now will grow up on these games and not experience the real thing. Going off what was quoted in the blog about music in elementary school, how would this change the child’s view on music? On a second note, the Wii Sports games, how will this affect a child’s view on sports? They could be playing this for months or years and then actually go and play the sport for the school and it be completely different than what they had expected.
On the plus side, this is great for children who cannot play certain sports or play music. Many people now are able to do things they thought they could never do again or were never able to.

Im not convinced. being a musician myself I believe learning an instrument hands on is much more efficent than using a tool such as wii music. Yes its very intruging not say the least and its amusing, but thats about it. Will it shape out lives? In america I could say more than ikely so because we've let evety other consumer product engulf our very beings and cloud our minds with endless noinsense. The gaming industtry is just another way of sitracting kids from fdoing theri hmk and making moimmy and daddy buy more and spend motr money. And as to others making the same thing? it is possioble its all a competition im sure sooner or later someone will come up with something even more niffty than wii music. I beleive its all a waste of tyime and money. Instead of buying a game to "excerise" get off your lazy behind and go run a few miles a day.

I think that the Wii is fun to play. I think that some of the games on Wii fit could help a person get in some exercise and maybe motivate them to exercise more; however, it also could keep people from going out and getting proper exercise because they think they are doing enough at home. I do not think that the Wii music game is going to make someone want to go out and play and instrument. It is much harder to play in real life than on a video game. I think the Wii does have much life like features but it cannot take the place of actually participating in the sport. I think it is awesome to see how far the gaming industry has come.

I think that Yess the Wii will help weight issues that are everywhere, ecspecially kids now days. Kids now arent aloud to go outside and get the excersise they need because parents are so scared.. so maybe since kids love video games that making something liek the Wii Fit will make it funn for kids to excercise. And parents can join too. On the other hand with the Wii Music game coming out i also agree. I think that if maybe i had something like this when i was little i would have been more interested in something musical. The Wii has many possibilities and i think that its getting familes up and off the couch all over the country.. which to me, that is something that needs to happen.

I definitely think that digital play can affect people’s lives. I own a Wii gaming system and even when I’m not intending on breaking a sweat or being active, my Wii forces me to be. I know that when we initially bought our Wii it came with Wii sports. It includes bowling, baseball, tennis, golf, and boxing. Although one may not always be extremely active or break a sweat while pretending to hit a ball in the baseball part of the game, for some people it may simply be just one more thing encouraging them to be active. When you’re surrounded with sports and activity, it encourages you to be more active on a daily basis. I don’t think that any other electronic could quite make the improbable seem so realistic. Its interactivity is incomparable.

I do think that digital play can shape our lives. Technology is booming and with it comes the new technology of games and video games. When I was a child, I used to play Nintendo with my cousins, and we played sitting in beanie bags or on the carpet. I think it’s a wonderful thing that kids will be more active instead of just sitting around and staring at a TV screen. Not only does that cause obesity in children, but their minds need lots of stimulation. This Wii sounds like a lot of fun for adults too. If there’s down time and you’re tired of the old “let’s watch a movie,” this sounds like it could be fun to play. I think other consumer electronics could do this too, I’m sure in time competitors will start coming out with similar products.

I also think that in the future, heck maybe even today that the Nintendo Wii can be used in rehab for people that have experienced something painful. It can help with hand-eye coordination, moving of joints and muscles. The gaming world has come a long way in 20 or so years from playing atari to now playin people in different cities and countries. The digital age is upon us now and we need to take it into affect. Also is that soon I bet that they will have major suguries done with gaming system and with the controllers that are present today I can definitely see that happening.

As a person that is extremely into the video game world, I know that the Wii is going to take everyone, your parents, grandparents, people who think playing games are stupid, everybody into its world. It's the most addictive game that you and your entire family can play together. You just have to give it a chance. As for it actually effecting our lives well I think it just depends on how far you get into it. If you like it a lot, its definetly going to affect your life. And Im completely sure that it can give people something that they never thought they could ever do like play musical instrument. As it said in the article, you can't mess up when playing Wii music since all your really doing is playing a digital instrument. If there is something out there that you think you could never be able to do, wait till the Wii puts it out.

I think that it is amazing what the video game industry is creating these days. I am someone that could honestly care less about video games, but I have to admit that the Wii interests me. I actually have fun and enjoy playing it, and that is something I never thought I would do. It opens up new possibilities, and certainly gets more people into doing things that they never were interested in before. It's not the average video gaming system and that is for sure.

I do think that it could help in today's society with obesity, expecially with children. Instead of sitting on the couch all day working out their thumbs, they are getting active- which is awesome! But as far as getting people to do things realisticly, I do not think it makes a difference. Just because I like to play Wii tennis, does not mean I am running out to the tennis courts. On the other hand, this might work differently for others, I can only speak for myself. It certainly gets people up and moving, and that is always a good thing. I am not sure what the gaming industry has in mind next, but now, the possibilities are endless.

In my opinion, I think that digital play can certainly shape our lives. Digital play can introduce some lazy gamers to get up and move. It can also help people motivate into becoming fit, healthy, or just become active in general. I experienced times when I did become lazy and stayed around the house until my friend introduced me to this game called Dance Dance Revolution(it’s a digital play where it allows you to keep moving by stepping on the pads along with the song being played). Honestly, when I played the game, I actually found myself having so much while also sweating and having my calf and thigh muscles to work! Although I haven’t played the game in a while, I play tennis and I think real sports outside video world definitely has more benefits. In brief, I do think digital play gives us things not thought possible because it allows people in certain age groups, old or not, to enjoy such activities. However, people need to realize that a game/digital play cannot help you learn things or become fit completely.

Digital Play has been impacting our lives even since first Pong game came out. TV has become form of recreation, not just entertainment. The games of today are so advanced and so realistic that some are considered works of digital art, combining unprecedented graphics, life-like sound effects, and professional voice acting. Video games are addictive. Billions of dollars are spent by players around the world, and countless hours are wasted in front of TVs and computers. Sometimes video games provide a way to escape the real world conflicts by providing an alternate universe where a person can be whatever they want and do whatever they like.

All consumer electronics change our lives in some way, but there has not been tremendous advances in how television or music is perceived. Maybe TVs got flatter, picture sharper, and music is now blasting from 7 different directions, but the underlying concept stayed the same. There is still no 3-D television, no viewer participation, no holographic images, no smell-o-vision, and no option to silence an instrument in a musical rendition. Games are the only entertainment that has changed significantly over the past twenty years to provide deeper experience and better interaction.

Whether or not digital play can shape our lives relates a lot to where this technological country is headed. I think that it does and will shape our lives; already there is a depreciating amount of children playing outdoors, in comparison to say ten years ago, when this technology was almost non-existent.
Things digital play could offer us include flying, beating up your friend without any hospital visits, or maybe even making yourself resemble someone you wish you were on a particular game. I'm sure I'm not getting the full meaning of the second question. I don't know of anything it could offer besides some self confidence regarding practiced skills.
Other consumer electronics that could offer this include flight simulators or driving/shooting video arcade games maybe even fishing games. The wii simply provides this technology to the consumer market as opposed to the commercial end.

As I have never played video games I don;t think I can express any kind of semi-educated opinion. But I am sure learning quite a bit from your posts.

I did find this story however and I believe it is quite intriguing. Accenture has developed a virtual meal technology, bringing videoconferencing to the dinner table. For those of us who have loved ones on the other side of the planet, it sounds like a good idea.

At any rate, let me take the opportunity to wish all of you a very happy Thanksgiving.

Digital things can definitely shape our lives, the only limitations is our imagination, My answer to the last question is, I am not certain about other consumer electronics that can do this, As technology evolves, more games are being designed for interactive computerized entertainment. All things shape our lives, look at the VCR transforming into the DVD/ CD and Computer interactive technology.
There are many great uses for these products; it can teach people great hand –eye coordination, a skill very important during early childhood and for those with limiting disabilities. Not to mention when interviewing for Job opportunities as a Surgeon, intense action orientated digital games are part of the interview. I am not a gamer, but enjoy the concept for the masterminds who create them and the programmers who write them. I think it is very exciting when a marketing product can be enjoyed by all ages; young, and old.

Digital paly can shape our lives because more nad more people are pleying video games rather than go outsire or read a book. No matter how expensive the games are, people still go ahead and buy them. Kids are doing worst at school, because instead of doing their homework, they sit infront of the television for hours at end. I mean a full eight hour work day can be spent infront of a video game. Its surprise how some of the players hardly ever seem to blink either. Its also amazing that a vast number of adults have video games compared to that of children.
Yes video games can give us things not thought possible. These games now can talj back to you, they are almost life like that its scary. Some of these games even have the individual part taking physically inorder to play. To play tennis, you have to serve putting your hands in the air, even bowling you have to act like you are about to bowl by swinging your hands. I have to admit, its not the real thing, the real thing involves more sweat and exercise. But some form of exercising does take place which is much better than just sitting on your behind in past times.
Other electronics have their players interacting just the Wii games. Take play station for example, you have to actually beat a drum or play a guitar. Again, nothing is like the real thing, but its so amazing how far video games have come and how far they are going to go. The very thought can be scary like alot of these games that are out. More and more videos games are violent and very scary, and even send the wrong message to little children, parents should monitor what games their children are playing, just like you would monitor what they watch on the television or sites they go to on the internet.
Our future is based on technology wish seem to be changing at the blink of an eye. I wouldn't be surprise if we do really end up living like the Jetsons.

I hope I didn't overshot you guys with some of the things in the article.

Any who, looking at it from a broader perspective, there may be other things that new, unique technology gives us.

We could look at things such as Cell Phones to mold people. In a negative way, we could say these people will more dependent on this machine. However, they may also develop other aspect that we couldn't dream of. Look at some children and their texting abilities. I'm sure that that alone is having some effect on skills in their daily life (such as typing).

iPod are also an amazing example of this. iTunes is unique in that it offered an entire catalog of songs. You also do not have to buy a single album, but you can by songs alone. Perhaps this may create an evolution in the music industry as people listen to more diverse music. It is also a massive catalog of music.

I'm sure I could go on. Dr. Smith also mentioned Online Classes which could also effect many people, both positively and negativity. Maybe I'll hit these topics another time.

The Wii (They should have left its name as 'The Revolution' in my opinion) is in a category all its own and has made an impact which Microsoft and Sony are currently trying to follow. (The updated XBox main screen now lets you make a "Mii" and play with your friend's "Mii's" Sony's Playstation 3 has a virtual world with "Mii's", much like Second Life)

The Wii is not a heavy 'traditional' gaming platform. Its an interactive one. There is no Halo 3 or Gears of War on the Mii.

The Wii's games bring people together (well that's what it is supposed to do) to get them active. I like this, because today most people are going to go exercise because it's 'not fun'. Now with the Wii Fit and Wii sports you are moving and interacting.

When DDR first came out people used it as a weight loss system. Older players also can be in their homes and exercise instead of having to go out and worry with things, like getting hurt and no way to reach some one, or getting attacked if they live in a city.

I have no problem with people using games to do what they need. Its how things are and are becoming. People are going to stay inside anymore (for the most part) and mess with their things, might as well make it social and get exercise while your at it. The world is changing and technology is paving the way.

I believe that as far as the gaming world goes the Wii may not be the best as far as graphics and storyline but it is much better for our children to play. It seems Nintendo has come full circle, in a good way. When I was younger the first Nintendo console had the games that used the floor pad so you could do games that involved exercise like track. When they went away from this idea it led to more kids shut up in their rooms, sitting down and gaining weight.

I do not believe that video games are better for anyone than reality. Kids should go outside, get exercise and interact with each other. I am against the way technology is making people more accepting to not having face to face conversations... or even relationships.

That being said I know that resistance,as they say,is futile and as long as kids (and adults) choose to play video games instead of doing something real I would rather my kid play Wii Fit than Grand Theft Auto.

I personally am a owner of a wii, and like the article said everyone can play it and enjoy it. Also like the article said its not like the past gaming sytem where you sit in the basment and just play. This gaming systtem gets you moveing and while your play believe it or not you get an excerise. But yea i defenitely think that digital play will change people lives. With these new games coming out you canlearn todo just about anything. It like your a character in a game and in the game world you have th abilty to do and learn whatever u want. Also i think other electronic games will try to copy the wii. But theirs isn't going to the be as good.

Let me just say I have a wii and I am absolutely in love with it. I do think that digital play can help shape our lives. I am a huge gamer. I rather just sit and play games all day, but when the Wii came out, and made interactive games, I finally got off my big butt and started getting interactive. I played Wii tennis, bowling, boxing, and even danced! This is definitely a new experience for the whole world to share. I think if people get to experience some of these things digitally, maybe they will start to want to experience those things in reality. I bought guitar hero for wii and let me say, it honestly made me pick up an electric guitar and try to play it. I know that my technique on the guitar made for wii won't get me anywhere with a real one, but just seeing me play it on wii, gave me the will and determination to get out there and actually try it. I have not tried on playing wii music but I plan on irt. I played the violin for 6 years and now that I can play it in a video game just makes in 10 times more awesome. I also think the wii also helps people get up, join in as a family, and get active!

I'm rather afraid that all this digital play will give us illusions of false talent. For example, I play Guitar Hero but cannot play guitar. Does it shape our lives? It could. I think the Wii fit has done some good in helping overweight people lose some of their fat and have fun at the same time. However, I fear for a nation that is so plugged into its electronics that it actually allows said entertainment to dictate their lives. I hope people can distinguish reality from fantasy. Video games should be entertaining, wholesome and educational even--but not a way of life.

The new crazy for technology such as, “digital play” is bombarding America families everywhere. This temporary type of entertainment is the running ramped causing people to sacrifice their real desires and replace it with artificial desires. Living in a fantasy world sounds enticing, giving everyone the opportunity to experience their virtual dream without the cost or disappointment. There are people who could benefit from this form of fantasy. For instance, the elderly in nursing home or tragic injury that has caused limited mobility. In this case, the elderly or patients (who is under medical treatment) would stimulate their minds and body with exercises, challenges, and self achievements while enjoying the camaraderie with others. This form of therapy could be eventually be covered by insurance and the benefits could soar above medical expectations. However, replacing reality with fantasy could be detrimental to society in many ways; the human senses could began to stagnate with false accomplishments, the brain’s development to process, analyze, and response could become less stimulating. Have we come to depend on technology to motivate and stimulate us? Let’s be realistic, do we need a substitute to make us feel good about ourselves

I have two little brothers that loveee playing video games. One of my brothers plays the drums. The other plays the guitar. Together they get into Rockband and Guitar Hero, but they tell me that it takes no actual skill to play these games. Well let me rephrase that, it doesnt take musical skill just gaming skill. I dont believe the Wii music games would open anyones eyes to playing any kind of musical instrument, because when they pick up an actual instrument and realize it is a lot harder than pushing buttons. Yes the world is fast changing and such, but if kids dont play real instruments, what kind of music will be out there in twenty, ten, even five years. Will Wii music be in classes? with children rather playing this game than actual instruments, will music, such as Band or Orchestra, even be in schools?

Anonymous said...

I believe the Wii eventually will become so popular that all other gaming companies (Microsoft and Sony) will have to come out with something that is interactive.
The Wii has a chance to turn kids who are couch potatoes to active kids that won't gain weight. Instead of laying around pressing buttons with their fingers and thumbs, they are instead up and about interacting.
I believe the Wii is a form of entertainment for parties or instead of going out to the movie for $9, you save money staying home and playing.
This is going to help reshape the world because it's just the first step to interacting with a controller. Next is interacting with your mind and then putting on a full suit to run in the park on the television screen.

As an owner of the Wii, I think the technology is great. It is very different from some of the other games out there. There are few violent games made for the WII. The incorporation of healthy ideas into the products, however, may not be the best way to combat obesity. The wii fit has some benefits- such as the built in scale which can be used to track weight loss progress- which is a small step in the right direction. Even though there the wii fit is meant to encourage people to lose weight, people should not substitute these games for actual exercise. The wii in general is a great technology, but people have to decide when to stop eating Mcdonald’s and take a jog around their neighborhood for any dramatic health changes.

Can digital games such as the wii shape our lives. My answer is no, but it can make our lives a bit more fun. Nothing however is better then the real deal, living something out in real life will always be my first choice. However I do want to give some well deserved props to the creators of the wii, because it was so genius to make a game that keeps the player active, rather then the norm of a couch potato. Not only dose it keep you active it is so much fun,in fact it is the only video game i have ever enjoyed playing. The best part of the wii thus far is the fact that all generations are getting the chance to use it whether your five and your playing games with some friends or 75 and your your playing it as a part of your therapy after hip surgery. The fact is that the wii is a fun and useful system for everyone.

I have never been into video games but I love to play the Wii the games are different then the all the other systems. With the Wii you have to get up and play with the Wii fit you can create a workout fro running in place to lunges and sit ups I think it is a fun way to get a work out but it depends on the individuals motivation. I think it could lead to great things but for some people it could be like every other video game because there are ways you can still sit on your couch and play.

I don't think Wii music is the best example of ways games can shape our lives though. Look at all the people that are going to school for video game design? I think it will get to the point that games will be seen as a form of art.
One can laugh at that easily..but the same was thought about film and photography when they came out. They were thought of ways of documenting information, not expressing artistic skill.
I will make a little confession here though. I am a history major. My influence for wanting to pursue history started with video games. Age Of Empires, Medieval Total War and Age Of Mythology introduced me to a place that not many ever learn about.

Certainly digital pay can shape our lives, but not always in a positive way. Even as advanced as video games are these days, they are still missing an important element…people don’t really have to use their brains and think. Video games do allow the player to use their imaginations, but not to the level they would have if they were being creative on their own. Also, so much time spent playing games creates a sedentary lifestyle. It’s easy to just sit in front of the TV all day and not get any exercise. Video games are great and I’ve played them myself, but parents should limit the use by kids.

I think that there will always be people that will take things to the next level. We have to be smart about the way we use technology! We have come along way and developed so many things that are great exercise for our mind and the minds of our children. There should always be a health balance in everything we do. If you are one of those people that have problems with your weight, try the games that get you off the couch! I think for those who already get out and get healthy, this is just another fun pass time and nothing for people to worry about. Some people are only looking for a short time escape from what ever it is that they need to get away from, or just good ole fun entertainment. There seems to be good and bad in most things that are developed, it is up to us to make the right choices for our selves and our family.

i know that for a fact WII can change the world. I say this with as much cofidence as some one who just lost weight. let me give you the back up story. My mom hates video games of any kind. It took grandma like 2 years to finally convience my mom to let her buy me one for christmas. it was the very first nintindo. every one should remeber it. It had the pee screen and only did simple things like run and jump and occassionally shoot non realistic fire balls at things. Any way I can remeber fighting over it with some friends and despretly trying to get that much more time out of it. each year after that to my mothers dismay my granny countinued to give either me or my sister the upgraded version.
What my mom did not like is that we would sit around doing nothing. Then Wii came out and her hole attitude changed. Wii had perfected the games so the more you got up the better chance you had at winning. My sister needed to lose a little weight to my mom told her for her exersise she had to do 15 minutes of wii aday. that is why it has changed the world.

I agree that digital play can change things, but not necessarily in a good way. First of all, if you can get anything you want out of life in a video game, it's going to alter your sense of reality. When you actually go out to do something in the real world, it will be harder than it would be in a video game, and this might frustrate some, or even make them feel like they shouldn't go out into the real world because it makes things difficult for them, when everything is just so much easier in their own home. Maybe you're so good at a music game that everyone that sees you play praises you, and theres nothing more for you to accomplish on the game. So what do you do? What if you go out and buy an actual instrument and find out you're not musically inclined at all? These kinds of games will only give people a false sense of accomplishment they don't deserve because they haven't actually done anything to accomlish their virtual goals. Also these games will stint social competency even moreso than our ever-growing dependancy on technology already has.

The game of wii music is a perfect example, getting people involved with the musical instruments. helping with rhythm and counting. I hope everyone gets a wii, and guitar hero is awesome too.

I can see how the Wii could be a social outlet for the family, but I do not see the draw. Just today I saw on TV somebody playing tennis using the Wii, I didn't realize that the Wii provided that format.Just the same, I would rather go out and play tennis rather than do it virtually and that goes for bowling as well. But I don't bowl much, about every ten years or so. I think this product is for gamers. My step son has one and he's in his thirties and a friend of mine's son has one and her son is seven or eight, so it does cover the age ranges very well. But I think either you like this kind of thing or you don't. It seems a bit like a tread mill or a stationary bicycle; everyone wants one and once they get it home, it never gets used and ends up taking up a lot of space.

I agree that digital play can change and shape peoples lives. I remember when the Wii originally came out my 4 year old cousin would play the sports (he wasn't very good but, he attempted) and had a blast every second while as he said, "I'm doing my workout." I find it amazing you can burn calories by playing a video game. But, I feel it will never replace going outside and playing in the yard.

I honestly believe that these video games can truly alter a childs life in both negative and beneficial forms. I think they may easily devote way too much interest and time into these video games and lose touch with reality but I also can see other benefits. These could be fun forms of exercise and fitness as described by the "Wii Fit" and possibly help reduce high numbers of childhood obesity for kids trapped indoors. I remember growing up with a "Super Nintendo" and all it included were games such as Mario World where the controls contain no more than a few buttons to make your player walk, run, and jump. The new technology is very impressive yet how far will it take us?

It actually really freaking works! i have lost weight and gained muscle mass and flexibility. so i am working out and playing a video game all at the same time. I think the video game industry realized that all of their customers were fat and lazy, well most of them and a big cooperation like Nintendo did not like that stereotype so they did something about it.

Unfortunately If kids would just go play outside there would not be have the weight problem there is. With this said and since kids would apparently rather stay inside and play video games I believe the wii is a wonderful creation. It seems to get kids much more active and I think it could help with self esteem issues at a very young age. They would probably have a broader imagination as well as be aware of more than just what is "within" their reach. I still agree with many others that this should not replace your regular workouts or a child's outdoor play but it is definitely a step in the right direction from where the majority of America currently stands or is headed right now.

Already happening no? They are training soldiers now with video games and what not.

So you ask can digital play shape our lives? It has, kind of. Kids now have the little interactive books to help them along, as I mentioned above, the U.S. Army's game/training device, or games to help build healthier brain activity (look at Nintendo's DS game, Brain Age was it called?), and it will only intensify as time goes on.

Many people feel a lot more comfortable sitting at home doing a work out routine (especially from a program, which is kinda the voice telling you to keep going, such as Wii Fit? I've not played it though) than going to a public gym where they may feel, well, not so comfortable.

Look around, I'm sure you'll find some other forms of this out there already, and as time goes on it will only become a more and more common sight,

I personally think that technology has good and bad influence in people live. I believe that digital play and technology does not shape our lives because we are the one who shape technology. Also, everything depends on how the media present the new technology. At the end, we are the one who decides which communication devices are suitable in our life. Everything depends on how people react to the new technology. For example, digital technology is a bad influence in young population live. Young population is spending more time in front of the television, computer and other electronics devices and not with their friends and families. Also, the media found another terminology that is very attractive to a lot of people that is call Wii fit, or have fun wile working out. I personally have a Nintendo Wii, two iPhone, and other electronic device in my house, but I would rather go for a walk with my dog, or have a nice conversation with friends and family. For me, technology is convenient and useful, but does not shape my life.

yes, I think digital play can shape our lives and of course it can give us this not possible in the real world HOWEVER, I belive this is only true with those interactive games such as the WII, or DDR etc.I do agree with most of the article but i think this is only true for the wii, not other game console is designed for this type of game play and with games like wii music and wii fit I think will shape a generation.
On the other hand, as far as wii music is concerned and trying to learn a real insturment are two totally different things. yes, it can help but, like david said it gives them a false hope because when it come down to it, it is not easy to learn a musical instrument and you really have to have the drive and the "calling" to be able to do that.an i really dont think an introduction at an early age will change much. now in that sense that is where these games fail. another point that I want to make is concerning the wii fit. if we as americans cannot find time to go to a gym or work out in the first place how can we find time to play a video game that simulates the same thing? why dont we just do the real thing? why is it that a video game will make us get off our couch but not self motivation or the actual want to stay fit. for all we know getting in shape could judt be a by-product of this game. anyway, despite all this video games are still fun and at the speed they are going they cannot be stopped.

Let me first start off by saying that I absolutely loveee the Wii. My little cousin got it for Christmas last year and I’ve been addicted to it ever since, but I don’t use it as a means to stay fit or to accomplish things I can’t in real life, but just for entertainment. This is still a gaming system, not real life and it shouldn’t be a controversial subject. The most exercise you could get from playing the Wii is working your arms and shoulders, while this could be a convenient way to exercise, you’re only working your upper body. I definitely agree with Jason Raimondo’s post, especially when he talks about tennis. Tennis is a great workout and the Wii’s Tennis can’t even begin compare.

I do believe that digital play does shape the lives of people in a positive way. Just like everyone else has mentioned, Nintendo wii and Dance Dance revolution are interactive. The wii has been used in the medical field for several things, from therapy to getting the elderly active in their living facilities. I do own the wii, and I feel that it is more family oriented and kid friendly, which can and has brought some “family time” back into this generation. I think that its great that you can bowl, play tennis, box, ect..but now they have that wii fit….and that just looks awesome. Its kind of like having a little gym in your house. Who wouldn’t find that as a good thing?

I honestly do think that game systems now a days can really shape someones life. I mean if you were betsy sue who stuffs her face and weighs 300 hundred pounds it sure would help that person shed weight. Ive known people who have played the ddr (dance dance revolution) game who has lost weight. I mean most big people dont believe they can do it and feel they will embarass themselves..so in their living room anything they wanted to be whether its a boxer to a tennis player..it can be done. Now i dont think we should just stop with all the real stuff and convert to all digital play..(never that) because nothin is the same as the real thing. If a child is interested in playing an instrument..i definately disagree with introducing a game system..

I do think it can shape lives. Wii has brought families closer together through video games everyone can play. My parents bought one so they have something they can do with their grandkids. When ever my sister comes over with her kids we all play some wii sports. They like the wii so much that they play it even when the kids arent here. So, in a strange way its increased the activities my parents do together.

It is also being used to help get people in shape. You move around a lot while playing wii games. Its also being used in elderly homes for entertainment and keeping the elderly's joints lose.

A game like wii music can help shape a childs interest in music also. Playing it at a young age, so 6 or 7, can spark a childs interest in playing a real instrument later in life.

I think Nintendo is doing a great thing with the games they are releasing for the Wii.

I am not a gamer myself, but I love the Wii so much I bought one a while back. It brings a different kind of interaction with game play that allows you to feel like you are actually a part of the game itself. I have also found it to be great for social gatherings. Wii bowling is especially fun with friends and some alcoholic beverages. I haven't played Wii music yet, and don't have much interest in it. I don't really get the appeal of games like Guitar Hero and Rock Band. To me it makes more sense to pick up a guitar and learn how to play it. But I like the article's point about young children and how someone's musical interest could be peaked but playing games like Wii music. However, nothing can replace the real thing. Wii games are fun but actually playing golf, going bowling with friends, or starting your own "Rock Band" is far more enjoyable and gratifying.

I am not a video game fan but to tell you the truth the Wii is a console that I am considering acquiring. Its versatility ant the broad demographics that the Wii system targets make it an amazing gadget compare with its competitors Sony and Microsoft. Yes, digital play is closer and closer of drifting our lives in a different direction, and to accomplish things never seen before. This game had revolutionized the gaming industry and the live of those who enjoy a gaming system that allows you free movement and interaction. Being a unique social gaming that can be enjoying by the family Wii is not a game is a new whole experience.

I think that the introduction of the Wii was the first great step towards fighting childhood obesity in the United States. It was a great idea to incorporate video games with being active, because i know from experience when playing Wii sports you are getting a workout. You can play tennis, bowling, baseball, boxing, and thats just to name a few, but when you are playing those games you really have to stand up and play the part. Say you were playing tennis you would really be swinging your arms and dodging back and forth as if you were in a match. It is a positive change for both the child and the parent, becasue the child still has his video games and the parent sees them being active at the same time. As well as Wii sports there is also Wii music, which includes 60 instruments. Wii music is great because you can experiment with different instruments and it is a new fun form of learning music.

Digital gaming can certainly shape people's lives. I don't think that gaming will deliver cultural change at a comparable level to the recent inventions of cell phones, or the internet; but innovations in digital gaming will be responsible for broading, and expanding the market of gamers in the world. Wii Music looks interesting. I recently saw a commercial for it, and Nintendo is wise in their ways of promoting this game. The camera moved from side to side and up and down, showing people of every size, and shape, age and ethnicity, jamming out with the remote. This "fun for everyone" approach, is why gaming will expand, and increase it's effect on society.
The most brilliant part about Nintendo's Wii is the fact that the console represents a fundamental shift in what a video game system offers. Sony and Microsoft competed to provide customers with top-notch graphics, and exciting new games with the Xbox, and PlayStation 2 systems early this decade. Nintendo's "Gamecube" console, which essentially was a watered-down, pathetic version of xbox/ps2, got murdered in user approval, and sales. This is why Nintendo took a different route with their newest installation, which has paid off, and will continue to improve and grow. Rather than attempt to emulate the juggernaut gaming systems (Microsoft's xbox 360, Sony's ps3) Nintendo created a unique gaming experience with their brand new system. This has allowed for the transition from role playing games, that appeal to the sterotypical geek crowd, because these games require extended periods of time, and sharp problem solving skills to achieve longterm goals- to an era interactive games that allow people to "pick up and play," for fun competition that relies on timing, and coordination, giving users short term joy when they are successful.
In the future- a smooth blend that combines visually pleasing graphics/landscapes, with more interactive motion sensing controls (because the motion sensing is pretty basic, and rusty in these early stages) will be the face of digital gaming, and popularity should spread to all age groups, and demographics.

This article peeks my personal interest because my brother owns a Wii which I've grown to love playing. I've always thought video games were a waste of time and electricity but this particular one proved me wrong. Wii boxing has helped me numerous times in relieving stress and built up animosity. while Wii Fit gives me a chance to live a healthier lifestyle when i cant make it to the gym. As far as the game giving people false hopes with its new program i feel its unlikely. To me this is just another step into the future that people only thought could be created in movies.

I think that it can definitely have a huge influence, I dont know about shaping lives, but then again who knows until its given a chance to expand. I m sure when things like the internet came out it was not immediately known how much the world would grow to depend on it, so In my opinion only time will tell how much of an impact it will have. Giving us things we never thought possible? absolutely. Im sure that 30-40 years ago when video games went about as far as that game where you bounce the little ball back and forth with the rectangles, no one would have ever dreamed that we would have things like virtual reality, so on and so forth. To me, video games are not something I spend a whole lot of time doing, but I can definitely still respect them and appreciate what an advancement it is, another marker for USA and the world, another milestone of what we the people are capable of creating. Another form of art.

Definetly the wii and other digital breakthroughs can allow people to do things that they regularly would not be able to. Like the article said not everyone can play an instrument but wii music makes it possible for anyone to create very imaginative pieces with no prior musical knowledge or ability. I work at an assisted living home, the residents there are all 80+ and the activity commitee puchased a wii. I walked down the hallway and i see a 88 year old man playing wii boxing or wii baseball, and i think to myself that the wii does give people a chance to things that they might be limited to in reality, but not in the digital world.

I think that what the video gaming industry is creating now-a-days is amazing! The amount of technology they are using in creating these games is unrealistic. As far as video games being able to motivate people to do different things, i for sure think that this is a possibility. Wii fit is a definate motivator to loose weight. Who wouldn't want to do something that they enjoy? Especially, if they know that it will help them to acheive a goal they need or what to reach? It may not alter everyone's lives who need it but I'm sure it will help change some peoples lives.

I have the wii fit and i have to say since my family got it we play it a lot and do the workouts. And before we had this game we never really would work out or go outside and run. So i would say that digital play shapes our lives. The wii definitely has a lot of ineractive games that you can play that i think our good for kids that choose to stay home and play video games because atleast with the wii most of the time you are not sitting down, you are actually moving around and being active which is good for younger children.

I definitely think that “digital play” will shape our lives, it already has. How many kids do you see riding their bike down the street on a hot summer day. I think that it is great that Nintendo came up with the concept of the wii, it is a way for kids to get their video game fix and be up and moving at the same time. As for the Wii music, the only down fall I see is this concept of fail proof…why are we trying to make everything so easy. Music takes practice, hard work and studying…for many people it is a life long learning process, why would we want to down play that.

In my opinion, i relly think that digital play will help kids and even adults become more active by playing games such as Wii, Wii fit, and even guitar hero. Nintendo went genius when they created these new game consoles for 2008. Ever since those games have been released, i dont think gaming has been the same. It's very very popular. Its obvious people love it because at my job we have very limited quantity of the product; and whenever we do get in the Wii's or Wii fits, they're gone by the time the store opens..which is 8 am. And its not just kids who love playing the game, the elderly and even parents are going crazy over the Wii fit. you can lose weight and still have fun by playing a game. i like to call it - working out in the indoors. Guitar hero helps you learn music, and kids can have even more imaginary fun by creating their own band, making music right in the living room. All you need is a tv screen to make it happen. Sure the consoles are alot more pricy than regular video game consoles, but think about it! how much more fun can you have actually pretending to swing a bat in your hand, or even knocking a ball back and forth against your partner standing next to you, versus pushing the "A" button? So yes i think digital play is a new awesome invention and wont be going out of stlye anytime soon. It'll just only get better.

Well I haven’t had the pleasure to play the Wii game yet but from what I have heard it’s awesome. I was amaze when I heard that it had a yoga game. I think that technology is the wave of the future and the younger generation is into it. We make new things in life as we progress in life and if a video game can help stop obesity then I’m all for it. I know that it’s nothing like having the experience of riding your bike with friends or playing at the park but times are newer and what was good for me may not be good for the next. I don’t think it could shape our lives but it can help other lives in some ways.

I think that gamming and electronics are getting a little out of control. I must admit the wii is a very cool game station to have and use. The makers of these games need to create something that students in school can learn from. Although they are mind stimulating non the less it seems the children are addicted to some of these games. This is not what parents need. I think if there were more educational games it would look better for out society.

i think the wii was a great invention for our generation. now we are being more creative, instead of playin video games sitting still on the couse we're throwing punches as we play the wii boxing and playin baseball in our living room! its a great way for our younger generation to get more active and fit, and most of them dont even know thier excersicing! it can also be utilized as a tool to get familes together, and for them to have family "bonding time" without a boring dinner or t.v show.

Playing the Wii is probably the most fun I have had with my family in a long time!

Digital play can help shape our lives. It provides a new world that is not possible in reality. The Wii is an excellent way to bring families together. Although the Wii is an expensive gaming system, it is a much cheaper entertainment compared to the price of going skiing or attending an athletic event. It is a great way to exercise without realizing you are exercising. With the way technology is growing, video games and consoles will be the number one best exercise you can do. It will be affordable, enjoyable, and a great way to interact with your family. Eventually, I am sure other consumer electronics can do this. People learn from other companies and in an attempt to make a better video game console.

I believe that eletronic consumers can do anything they put their minds to and they have already shown us that by the type of electronics they create. For example the type of games for these type of gaming systems and other things like the i-phone. Although I don't think people should let digital play shape their lives because it is causing people to become less social. For example if people think that the wii fit will help them lose weight then they find no reason to go to a gym, or if they play wii sports then why go outside and play with friends. Even though I think the idea of all of this is great I think it is taking away from how people normally socialize.

well my little sister has a wii, and the first time i seen it. It was weird because it was a change. were used to jus sitting down and playing and now we stand up, jump around, moving your arms and feet with nintendo wii. Even though its more movement then our usual video games system, i dont think it replaces a real life exercise! Digital play can shape our lives, because it has more activity then just being lazy and sitting down.

I think digital play is a great thing for the most part. Just like with most things, as long as you don't have an addictive personality you're good to go. It's the same with alcohol, work, sports, shopping, anything.

As for shaping our lives? Sure!

I have a Wii Fit at home and I love it. I go to school full time and work alot... I have no time to go to the gym and I have no money to pay for a membership. The wii has made it possible for me to juggle school and not keep on that freshman 15 lbs. Pretty sweet. I'd say that's shaping my life as well as my abs.

For our older generation digital game play is a Godsend. Finally something they can do with their grandkids. Not only can it help bridge the gap between the old and the young, the games keep your mind sharp. A score is kept and that keeps you on your toes. As long as your mind stays sharp, a you can live longer and happier. That is definentely shaping lives.

I'm not too sure that video games can shape peoples lives. However it may be able to put a message forward saying hey I need to do this or do that. But as far as shaping lives I dont think so. Like the weight issue for instance. I dont think people are going to lose weight by playing the video game. In order to lose weight you have to be on a healthy diet and get the proper amount of exercise. I would also think that by kids playing these video games and not being able to mess up is not very helpful. What happens when they try to play a real instrument and mess up, they might just quit. So by having this game it might teach them that even if they mess up it's okay but in real life it wont be okay.

I think that digital play can help shape our lives because gaming consoles such as the Wii can help you excercise because your not sitting down playing a game. Your actually moving and jumping around whick makes it really fun and your getting a workout while your playing without even knowing it. I haven't heard of another gaming console like the Wii, but most likely there will be better gaming consoles like the Wii in the future.

I see digital play as being good for us as a society to keep in shape. I have played the Nintendo Wii with my little cousin and I can say that it honestly works. My six year old cousin plays the wii sports and actually benefits from what he is imitaiting the process. The kid stays in shape and sees that it is helping in the sports that he plays. This type of gaming helps people see that they can stay fit even if it means that they stay inside. This type of gaming gives people time to exercise when they don't even know that they are exercising. It really does help and is worth the money because it offers so much more then means of entertainment.

I think, to an extent, digital play can at least alter our everyday living. A few years ago, the super nintendo was the way to go. It was a fantasy filled world with simple concepts of right and wrong, it was a fun way to kill time. Today, video games are smarter and more life like than ever before. The gap between fantasy and reality is slowly fadind away because games like grand theft auto allow you to do extraordinary things in "real life settings" . You can get away with anything in that game and I believe that sense of freedom is what has made the game so popular. Wii music lets you make music in a simple way and if you think about it, the video camera grants us control over time. So in a way the digital world does indeed give us the power to do extra ordinary things (if only for a moment)
I don't believe it can shape our lives however. These games and gadgets are only popular because they offer extreme variations of our everyday lives. In other words, we "shape" them, not the other way around.

My boyfriends mom bought his sister The Wii and the Wii fit for her birthday last June. During the times i have been over i have watched her play and have also played myself. In the article it was mentioned that a videogame is not intertaining if it is easy. Well let me tell you that not all of it is easy, sometimes it is really hard! Because you are not only "playing" a video game but in a since you are working out! I think that this technology is great! The Wii is showing that this is possible. They are not only making their video games intertaining but healthy in a since. Now when playing a video game its not just a waste of time.

ARamadhan said...

I do agree with the suggestion that digital play shapes our lives. In a lot of games, players do immerse themselves in the game to a remarkable extent. The scenes and plots provided in a video game builds a world based on a “what if” concept. While a gamer might never be able to fight aliens to regain the freedom of earth, or go on a quest to free the land from an evil empire, or fight in the war in Iraq, the gamer can still see what might that look like from a comfortable seat in a living room. Not only that, but actually have a say in the course of events and shaping the virtual world they take part of. Another concept that games bring is making the impossible, possible. A good example of that is the Wii console. And how it provides the opportunity to experience what things might or could look like. Who could have ever expected to ever be able to ski, fish, and play table tennis without leaving their seats? And with wii’s new program, imagination is the only limit to what can consoles develop in to. Other electronics have absolutely no chance in competing with the experience and the level of activity of what goes on in a video game console. The interactive experience could probably be noted as the most significant one. The level of interactivity a consumer reaches when operating a gaming console is unparalleled by any other electronic device.

HarlequinMask said...

The gaming industry is a quick learner. They learn what the consumer likes, loves, and hates. They are also probably the most well known competitive industry. All the time you hear about Sony developing this before Microsoft and Nintendo reinventing something that Sony and Microsoft didn't think about. But if you look at it, the gaming industry is pushing along the technological advances. Because of some of the inventions for the gaming consoles, some companies take an idea and use the basis of that idea to create something even more useful. Currently, the phenomena is the Wii Fit and the games akin to it.

Think about it. If you told your kid, "Johnny, go outside and exercise." What do you think the answer would be? If my mother said that to my brother, he'd laugh and stay where he was. But if you instead say, "Johnny go play the Wii Fit game for 45 minutes to an hour." The answer would be much more responsive. A child likes to be told to go play the game, and if it is a game that encourages exercise, the child, as they grow up, will not be so against exercise, and will link exercising outdoors, to playing the Wii Fit. Like wise with Wii Music.

The gaming industry is bringing about a technological revolution, the likes of which could not have even been imagined 10 years ago.

Any thing is possible.

I think the wii may have an effect on the creativity of children. Their interests in music or sports may start at an earlier age. Maybe the idea of being active will come back to life, and children will want to get up and do something rather then sitting down and playing video or computer games. With the amount and variety of games being made for the wii, i've noticed people wanting to try new things, more often. As far as the music game goes, I do think an interest in instruments would probably develope, however the skill wouldn't unless there is a way to make mistakes.

I think digital play can shape our lives. Just because I think that it can shape our lives, definitely does not mean I like it, at all. I think it is an invasive thing in our lives, and all any young child ever seems to want to do is play on their digital player. What ever happened to playing hopscotch or kickball outside with your neighborhood friends? I haven’t seen children this into a fad since the resurrection of “pogs” which I will admit took over even my life. I think other electronics can do great things in our lives, especially computers. All medical technology is based on the foundation of computers, luckily, it has already given us things we thought to be impossible, and I am confident these things will also advance.

I think other consumer electronics could do this too, I’m sure in time competitors will start coming out with similar products.

i think this type of "Digital play" can leed to some good things by opening doors to other activities. when people play games like Wii Music and gain an appreciation for creating music it has the ability to spark a creative mind set in a person. so in a sense it can change lives, but i don't think it will become a substitute for real instrumental composition. when playing this game a person must stay within the boundaries of the game and its mechanical/digital foundation. Human creation is beautiful because it tends to shatter boundaries and change foundations. technology can greatly improve our lives but i fear dependence on Digital interaction can threaten true human interaction and creation, putting us in a civilization that holds rules and structure to be superior to freedom.

I really like the idea of digital play I mean alot of people out there who were never into video games are now playing them( like the grandma the article mentioned) but that isn't always good, it could help turn us into a fatter lazier society, but the Wii is actually helping that too with Wii Fit I mean seriously a game that you exercise on who would buy it? But yet at my job they dont stay on the shelves more than 15 minutes so I guess Digital Play is good, it lettting people do things they couldnt do, wii music and sports like boxin, or things they just would rather do in a fun way in thier house like Wii Fit, So i guess this is a good thing but really I have got to say that everything done is better in real life rather than a video game

I have not played the wii but sure sounds like a new direction in gaming technology. Can this shape our lives?
I guess for gamers and others less inactive this could promote more physical activity, which is good, but I think more traditional forms of exercise can be more rewarding. Isolation from too much video game can cause people to miss out on many experiences that help shape our lives.
Can it give us things not thought possible?
Who would have thought ten years ago that a system would be available like this? I guess it could give some people the experience of something otherwise not obtainable or maybe inspire someone to actually try the real thing.
Can other consumer electronics do this?
Yes. Look at any household electronics that have made lives simpler than in times of the past. The widespread use of the internet for many applications, like the blog we are involved in right now. People these day and their inability put their cell phones down for more than five minutes. So many different types of electronics change the way we live our lives, although some seem more justifiable than others.

Yes, video games can help shape our lives and cultures. That is already evident. Video games have already been used as teaching tools since Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego and Oregon Trail. This is an old idea that Miyamoto creatively adapted for a different medium. It will obviously affect the growth and thinking of people. Pyschologists and doctors already acknowledge that play and interaction are two essential aspects of a child's formation and greatly affect them when they get older. I believe that these types of interactive games will keep coming and benefit society. Also, just because you don't like Halo doesn't mean you should not play video games. Have fun grandma.

I’m loving this idea about the whole digital play. What Nintendo created sounds very impressive to me. It’s something new added to our world of technology. And the fact that they were laughed at was quite foolish. I believe it is going to attract a new set of audience. For one, I’ve always wanted to play the guitar and I’ve never had the chance. Now, if I get the wii music, I’ll be able to play the guitar and lots of other instruments. So having Nintendo come up with all these crazy and creative ideas allows us as humans to do things we never thought we would be able to.

First of all, I do not like video games I think they are stupid, I would rather be outside riding horses or playing with my dog than be stuck in a stuffy old house playing video games all day. Although it is interesting to see what people can come up with, for example, dance dance revolution, I think that is a brilliant game it's a great way to exercise and get energized. I also think that family games can be a fun way to enjoy being around your family and spending time with them, but as far as video games shaping our lives I do not agree with that, that just sounds stupid. I would much rather spend my money on something more useful. My fiance loves to play video games and i get on to him all the time, because they really make him lazy, and this is happening with alot of guys, I think video games do more harm than good.

i think that digital play can affect to way we approach things, like life, i know a lot of people that play the wii a lot and use the wii fit for exercise. that does not mean i agree with them using that as means to replace exercise altogether. nothing can or will replace getting up and sweating and doing actual work or exercise, but it is good to see the gaming industry doing something about the weight epidemic going on. for all the bad things people can say about video games, people cannot deny what the wii has done for gaming and the people who play them, it has inspired countless people to get up and do things they never would do and i think that is a very good thing that has come from digital gaming.

I do think the video game world has expanded greatly in even the past couple of years. It is sad to say but children are really learning from the video games. There are now games called v-smart for toddlers to learn basic things and games like the wii music for people who want to learn with out playing an instrument. I also really like the new wii fit. There making working out virtual now, how crazy is that???

wow where to start, I play video games pretty often and its good to see they are coming up with more interactive games, but on the down side its just a way to get people into video games. they are just making it more broad so you will get into the video game market. Guitar hero as alot of people posted about it, got alot of girls to play video games, wii fit is just spreading it that much more. I just think if your going to work out or doing something just do it in real life its still not the same. I play video games to play them. I dont play any of the wii games or any of the physical activity ones because I play tennis, when i want to just relax im going to do that and play a normal game. And for the person that said something about guitar hero kids learning how to play that instead of learning how to play a real guitar, you need to realize how hard guitar hero is on expert. it takes alot of time just like playing the real guitar if they choose to play a game with their time instead is their choice.

Personally i love playing the Wii and it is lots of fun. However, do i rally think that it will impact my life to the degree that i either will become a great tennis player or boxer? No. Although it is a far stretch from those games that only require four fingers, it is only a glimpse of work you would have to put in for the real thing. I know i cant not win a game of boxing in real life, but whose to say that the Wii is supposed to train you to become one. The fact of the matter is that its only used for fun purposes.

On the other hand, if a kid was to play the sports games on the Wii, they are becoming aware of the different types of sports they can play outside o the house. Thus giving them a desire to try something new. Will they find it as fun as playing it on TV? That is unknown. But at least there will be that possibility for them.

I have played Wii and I find it quite enjoyable. However, it is no substitute for the real thing. I do have to give credit to Nintendo for thinking outside of the box when it came to the traditional video game. Now people have the option of interactive play or the traditional sedentary activity.

Now this digital music may be innovative but it gives kids a false sense of the real thing.
I play the guitar and absolutely suck at playing guitar hero; but if you ask me to play REAL music on the REAL guitar then no problem. Bottom line it is fake!! Instead of spending countless hours playing a video game, pick up a REAL guitar or drums or something constructive. Are the next generation of bands going to be playing songs through guitar hero? That would be a sad sad day for me and anyone who is a musician.

I believe yes it can. It can introduce people to things that they would not normally be able to participate in, and if they find they really enjoy doing it on a video game they may seek it out in real every day life in order to try it out. This could create more musicians, atheletes, and etc. The differencwe between what Nintendo is doing and what the other gaming companies are producing is that Nintendo is marketing to people of all age groups by creating something that multiple age groups would want to do. Especially if they are people who never got a chance to participate in those activities in their own lives.

I have to agree with most people. I do think that video games an technology are changing and defining our culture, but I dont think theyll really keep us fit or teach us skills like actually activities do. However, I do like the concept of getting people off thier couches and allowing them to interect with the games. Dont get me wrong I think Wii fit an sports and stuff like that, do help you not gain weight while ur playing, but if people are really relying on that as their excercise routine...we are in big trouble. And yes its fun to pretend you know how to play instruments, but everyone knows that even if you play that game every day an become "the best", I wouldnt hand you a guitar an you expect to be a rockstar.

Nintendo's approach into Digital play is both a success and a failure at the same. On the positive side, wii music, or just the wii in general,is attracting a huge variety of people of all ages. It gives newcomers a chance to try out something new and unique, rather than the onslaught of "hardcore games." On the flip side, it pains me to see wii music on the shelves, especially since I'm a musician. Wii Music simply takes the fun of practicing an instrument by allowing you to make wierd motions with the controllers, making you think you're a great musician. This also shows us where our society's headed too: more digital apps to make things "easier" for you to do, while taking the actual talents necessary to peform that task

Lets face it video games have evolved into their on lil world. People live for games and if some people could have their way would live in a video game. It is amazing how advanced games have become. I remember what they used to be like when Nintendo first came out. and the health issues that we face in society can be partially to blame on the laziness video game promotes. Also, the lack of socializing that gaming makes us miss out on. I applaud the effort to try and make more games that are better for our kids and other members of society. It is here to stay and as technology advances it will only help to cultivate a society that will be influenced greatly by the latest game and technology. But some games (virtual reality) can be beneficial. For example when I was in the military there was a system established that allowed us to practice training without getting hurt and required almost as much mental awareness as an actual encounter. Overall I think that we should use games to our advantage best as possible.

I don't think its going to solve world obesity. I don't believe it's going to keep everyone fit, but the people who plays the Wii might stay fit. It also depends on how much time they play the Wii. I'm pretty sure they do have a LIFE, so they might not be able to play as much and get that exercise they need to stay fit. If older people and young children play the Wii all the time then i believe it will keep them in fit.
Now the Wii is going to have music instruments people can play. I'm not sure if that will encourage students to participate in music class in school because once again, it depends on if they use that musical instrument on the Wii. What if they never use it and all they do is play the games on Wii. Then they will never play the musical instruments, and not want to participate in music class at school. If all depends on how much people play the Wii. There are so many other things people have to do besides play the Wii, so i'm not sure that people will play it enough to get the full effects that the Wii has to offer. Children have to go to school, come home and do homework, chores, eat, and then play. They also have to go to bed at a decent time because they have school the next day. The Wii can a be a good weekend workout or a summer vacation daily exercise. Some children are involved in extra activites like pop-warner football or basketball. So it depends on how busy the children and older people are, and whether or not they play the Wii enough for this to be successful.
Will other electronics be able to do this? I'm pretty sure they will. If something is very successful I'm pretty sure someone else will make another system very similar to the Wii. Electronic engineers are a bunch of copycats trying to make money. The XBOX, the PS3, they're all pretty similar and if the Wii out performs them all then there will be another system made that's resembles the Wii.

Can they? Sure, they CAN. I think the real question is…do we want them to? Do we really want to spend so much time on a video game machine that it has a chance to shape our lives? I believe that video games should be an addition to our lives rather than becoming our lives. Maybe we have the weight problems and health problems because we sit around playing these games too much. If we need exercise because we are over weight then let’s get up off of our butts and take a walk instead of playing a game that “helps us get fit”.

I believe that we have made our lives so complicated that it’s hard to enjoy the life we have created. If we think something is not possible for us in our lifetime then we, naturally, make room for other things to happen. Then there is no longer this pressure to make it happen. But when we create something like this Wii that tells us that we can now have all these experiences that we thought we had given up, we now have to fit it all in. In addition to that, we also take away the drive to “go out and get it”. When we think something isn’t going to happen but we really want it. We try to find a way of making it happen. But now we are being told, “Hey, don’t worry about trying to find a way to get that or do that. We will bring it right to your sofa.” And we wonder why we, as a society, are so lazy!

Now, don’t go thinking that I am saying that we should give everything up. I am saying that everything should be in moderation. Use it a little but stop expecting that this should fulfill all of your life and that you should not leave your house. Everything can be used as a tool and can enrich your life. But it can also be your downfall.
