College Cost reduction Act was passed today

The HCC faculty was notified today that both Houses of Congress passed the College Cost Reduction Act of 2007 with bipartisan support (by a vote of 79 to 12 in the Senate and 292 to 97 in the House of Representatives). This legislation is of vital importance to the student body as it will boost college financial aid by nearly $20 billion over the next five years, reduce excessive federal subsidies paid to lenders in the college loan industry, and reduce the federal budget deficit by $750 million.

Furthermore the College Cost Reduction Act will increase the Pell Grant maximum award by $4,800 next year and to $5,400 by 2012, it will cut interest rates from 6.8 percent to 3.4 percent by 2011, it will provide upfront tuition assistance for graduate and undergraduate students who agree to teach in high-need public schools and it will increase income protections for working students.

It is important that you check to see how your representative and senators voted.

This is great news to hear. We need to give people more and more opportunities to go back to college or to start it for the first time. I have found it quite taxing to work 40+ hours a week and try to concentrate on school at the same time. If I could receive financial aid along with many other students we would not have to work as much and be able to devote more attention to our school work.

I think this is goos news. With this incresse i think it will give more people a chance to go to college. I think that many people become discourage from the cost of college alone , so with the pell grant and other scholarships the chances are endless

This is great news to myself as well as others.Without the help of these grants I, as well as many others, would not be able to attend college.

I agree with chros. I work full, I am a full time student, and a fulltime mother. During the summer I have to do lots of overtime and save the money so that when the fall and spring semesters roll around there will be some type of cushion since I am not ble to work any overtime. but I have to go to school and I have to take care of my son.

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEES! I knew choosing to vote this year would pay off. Its about time, and I thoroughly believe that this is due to the boom in internet poll popularity and the new "youtube generation"

You can lose a lot in life but you can never lose your education. Knowledge is vital to living and its great news that the prices of these insitutions will be going down. It will give so many people a chance to go back to school.
